XCTC brings brigade size training back to the National Guard

July 12, 2007 - With most Combat Training Centers (CTCs) being used primarily for Active Army units, the Army National Guard (ARNG) has limited arenas in which to train for deployments overseas.XCTC, an eXportable Combat Training Capability exercise makes brigade size training a reality for the ARNG.

For the third year in a row Coalescent Technologies, along with subcontractors Cubic International and SRI International have set the standard for brigade size training the ARNG. “XCTC brings extremely realistic battlefield environments together with state of the art instrumented training programs to their home station or regional training site,” according to Dr. Kenneth Whitmore, CEO of Coalescent Technologies.“After last year’s highly successful exercise with Indiana’s 76th Infantry Brigade, we are now preparing future XCTC exercises to be scheduled shortly.

Brigade element training was once limited to CTCs.With XCTC it is now available at most military training areas. This is a result of advances made by Coalescent Technologies’ teaming with Cubic and SRI. The Cubic team develops the settings, characters, scenarios and battlefield effects reflecting the current operating atmosphere found overseas.SRI brings the Deployable Force-on-force Instrumented Range System (DFIRST) to the program. This system is made up of several sets of instruments that are mounted on as many as thirty-three vehicles at a time.Wearing Integrated GPS Radio Systems (IGRSs) soldiers can monitor and track the individual movement of the vehicles in a computer system. In this way entire exercises are recorded and evaluated for important lessons learned.Managing the entire process, Coalescent maintains a strong communications linkage with the customer so no question is unanswered and no soldier is untrained.

Upcoming XCTC events currently being planned will be entirely different from last year’s exercise because today’s opponent on the battlefield has changed. Coalescent Technologies with its subcontractors have answered that issue by providing current training programs that have been battlefield tested and proved. “Many of the scenarios combat teams will face in this training are taken from actual situations our trainers experienced while fighting overseas,” stated Dr. Whitmore. In a war where tactics and strategies are constantly evolving to keep up with the enemy, XCTC 2007 will give the National Guard the training required to maintain a sharp edge on the battlefield.
